How To Boil An Egg

You thought you put an egg into boiling water. You thought wrong.

Prepare Eggs

Take room temperature eggs, weigh them and choose the smallest pan they'll fit.

Boil Salted Water

Fill your pan with water, salt it generously and bring it up to a full boil on a high heat.

Prick Eggs

While the water is heating, let the eggs float in some cold water and prick the exposed shells to prevent cracking.

Cook Eggs

Once the water is at a rolling boil, carefully place the eggs in the pan and start your timer(s).

Remove and Chill

Remove the eggs from your pan after the correct time and immediately run them under cold water for two minutes.

FAQs

Find answers to commonly asked questions about cooking the perfect boiled egg.

Do I really need to weigh my eggs?

Yes, if you want consistently delicious eggs.

What equipment do I need?

A pot with lid, kitchen scale, timer, and slotted spoon. For best results, use an appropriate sized pot that keeps eggs from rattling.

Can I use this calculator for extra-large or jumbo eggs?

Yes! That's why we calculate by weight rather than size grade. Just weigh your egg and enter the exact number.

How can I prevent eggs from cracking while boiling?

Prick your eggs first, lower eggs gently into the water using a spoon, and ensure they're not straight from fridge into hot water.

Why plunge eggs in cold water after boiling?

This stops the cooking process immediately and prevents the grey ring around the yolk. It also makes peeling easier.

What's the best way to peel a boiled egg?

Gently crack and roll the egg on a hard surface, then peel under running cold water for easiest shell removal.

What's the best way to serve soft-boiled eggs?

Serve in an egg cup, use a sharp knife to remove the top, and enjoy with buttered toast soldiers. Season with salt and pepper.

Is Rupert okay?

Most of the time.
